Tirumala Tirupati

Welcome to Adiyen Sri Ramanuja Dasan !

" Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha !"

1. Who composed Sattrumurai & When?
2. Who made it compulsary that in all Vishnu Temples Saattrumurai must b recited everyday?
3. What are the ristrictions in reciting them.( Timings or pooja intervals) ?

Please refer to the Jeer System section on page 5 of this file in Tirumala website - http://www.tirumala.org/vaikhana-eng.pdf

Saattrumurai was never composed. It is only a collection of some Prabandha pasurams and felicitation of acharyas. It has nothing unique and original about it. Each temple has its own Divya Prabandha Goshti, and they recite Acharya Vaazhi thirunamam according to their respective acharya parampara. Thiruppavai and Pallandu were personal favourites of Bhagawad Ramanuja, and hence they are recited.

Divya Prabandha saattrumurai was attempted from 900's by Swami Nathamuni, and it was in his disciple lineage Bhagawad Ramanuja took over sometime around 1050, and was largely successful in establishing it.

It should be said, that the attempt by these acharyas from Nathamuni till Ramanuja Muni should have been for re-establishment, because, during Azhwar times, it was already in Practise, where in Azhwars recited their self-composed prabandhams.

Pancharatra aagama allows non-vedic hymns to be included in regular temple worship and hence including Divya Prabandham wasn't a problem. But in the case of Vaikhanasa aagama temples, it was rather difficult, and so Swami Ramanuja suggested that it will be an addendum to the system without changing its basic character and carried out exclusively by a Goshti (who themselves are Pancharatris). So, in usual practise, the bhattars perform the daily routines, and typically after thaligai (neivedhyam), the bhattars will step aside, and the Goshti would come in and recite the saattrumurai and leave, and the bhattars carry on with their routine as usual.

Historical accounts indicate that this practice was re-established by Bhagavad Ramanuja as part of administrative measures. During Sathumurai, the Periya Jeeyar hands over thulasi to the archaka. In the absence of Periya Jeeyar, Chinna Jeeyar (of Tirumalai - not to be confused with our Naryana Jeeyar swamy varu) and in the absence of both of them, the ekangi swamy performs this function. After sathumurai pasuram, thiruppallandu, the vazhi tirunamam of Manavala mamunigal are recited.

After this, theertham and sadari is given in the following order :

1- Pedda Jeeyar Swamy
2- Chinna Jeeyar Swamy
3- Ekangi Swamy
4- Tholappachariar
5- Representative of Ananthanpillai vamsham
6- Rep. of Kandadai vamsham
7- Rep. of Prathivadi Bhayankaram
8- Rep. of Veeravalliyar vamsham
9- Rep. of Dharmapuriyar vamsham
10- Followers of Paravastu Pattar Piran Jeear.
