Tirumala Tirupati

Welcome to Adiyen Sri Ramanuja Dasan !

" Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha !"

Meaning of Saattrumurai

The first two verses of Saattrumurai are the last two pAsurams of Thiruppavai. According to Swami Ramanuja, it is the basis of all Vedas. (It comes again in vAzhi nAmam of Aandal "Vedham anaithirkkum vitthaagum") So it is not possible to tell the meaning in one go.

But for a brief reference, kindly read this document http://www.scribd.com/doc/7040202/Thiruppavai

The next two are First two verses of Thirupallandu by Periyazhvar (Aandal's father). Please read this http://www.sundarasimham.org/ebooks/Thirupallandu.pdf for explanations. This was sung when Lord showed himself in the sky atop Sri Garudan, to Periyazhwar, while he was honoured by the Pandya king.

The rest are vAzhi thirunAmas of aacharyas, and Andal.

proper lakshanam - It depends on the temple and goshti practise. I am not aware of the practise in Tirumala. But in temples I have experiences with, one needs to wear 12 tirumaN, grihastas with panchakacham and brahmacharis with moolakacham (ordinary way of wearing dothi), with angavashtram tied atop the navel on the body (not over the dothi) and with atleast side-bunds shaved (proper chowlam is prefered).

Typically in small temples, the 'regular' goshti will be small and hence anyone coming in proper attire may be included, but in large temples, where the usual goshti is big, one may need to contact them before hand and get prior permission to join them for a particular utsavam.

The Sri Vaishnavas who want to attend Sathumurai should present themselves in proper lakshanam. Proper Lakshnam includes

1. No Side Burns
2. Proper clothing such as Pancha Kacham for Gruhastas and Dhoti for Bramhacharis , Yagnopaveetham etc
3. Oordhuva Pundaram - Thiruman Kaapu and Sri Churnam , Dwadasa Pundaram preferred.
4. Knowledge of Sathumurai Pasurams

Q .: dvAdasa Urdhva pundram means (12 Thiruman & Srichoornam) ?
Is Yagnopaveetham is a must? ,i mean other sri vaishnavas who does not Yagnopaveetham cannot participate in sattumurai ?
No Side Burns ? what does it mean

Ans .: I do not think Yagnopaveetham is a must. But kindly consult with Periya Jeer Mutt regarding that.
"No side-burns" means, clean shaved, and no facial hair near the ears, below the eyebrow line.... something close to Military shaving. Strictly speaking, it must be chowlam, but atleast sides must replicate a chowlam.
in case one has beard, it is fine. but not a shaved face with some stylish side bunds left near the ear.
