History: Its said Lord Vishnu married a tribal women in that area. Mahalakshmi was born in a tribal settlement who are called as Soligas. Those people even today call Lord as Bava (brother in Law). Whenever a wild animal approaches or poses threat, they call, Bava pls help us..., and the wild animal goes back to dense forest. Their is no reports of animal human conflict in that area.
Their is a huge footwear of Lord. The footwear is about 3 feet in length, and their is a walking stick inside the temple. Its said, Lord everyday wears that footware and uses the walking stick to roam casually taking care of his relatives in the forest. So once can clearely see the huge foot marks on the footwear. And to the surprise once can see mud marks underneath the footwear. The footwear gets wornout as ours do, and its replaced once in 3 years or so.
The main Diety is Lord Vishnu, and it was named as Ranganatha by the King Tipu Sultan when he visited to this shrine (17th Cen). Tipu Sultan's Capital is SrirangaPatanna, where the temple of Sri. Ranganatha Swamy is present. So he called the Vishnu Idol as Biligiri Ranga.
